In the digital age, access to technology is a necessity. The global shift toward digital education, remote work, and online communication has made it clear that technology is vital for personal and professional success. However, there remains a significant gap in access to technology – this is what we call digital poverty.

At Tektraders, we have been working with schools throughout the UK on reducing the impact of digital poverty.

What is digital poverty?

Digital poverty refers to any barriers to digital tools and the internet. It’s the inability to access, afford or effectively use technology. This includes not only the lack of devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones but also poor quality internet connections or a lack of digital literacy.

As classrooms go digital, pupils without access to modern technology or the internet are left behind and unable to participate in online learning whether at home or in school. According to a report by the Good Things Foundation, approximately 1.5 million households in the UK lack access to home internet.

How can schools help combat digital poverty?

Over the years, schools have explored and implemented various strategies to boost digital confidence among young people, equipping them with essential skills they can carry into adulthood such as…

  • Provide access to devices: Schools can offer pupils access to devices such as laptops, tablets, or even smartphones. Many schools have implemented device loan programs, where pupils can borrow devices for the duration of the school year or longer. This ensures that all pupils have the tools necessary for digital learning.

  • Improve internet access: Schools can partner with local internet providers to offer discounted or free internet services to low-income families. Some schools also provide Wi-Fi hotspots that pupils can take home, ensuring that internet access is available where it’s needed most.

  • Digital literacy programs: Schools can integrate digital literacy programs into the curriculum, teaching pupils not only how to use devices but also how to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and effectively.

How Tektraders can help schools maximise their tech budgets

While addressing digital poverty requires significant resources, many schools face budget constraints that make it challenging to provide the necessary technology for all students. Unfortunately, schools are often overcharged by tech companies so it’s even harder to stretch limited budgets.

At Tektraders, we offer impartial advice to schools across the country to find the best technology solutions for their pupils all while staying within their budget. We consider factors such as longevity and purpose to ensure that every investment is cost-effective.

Digital poverty is a growing issue that threatens to widen the educational divide, leaving many pupils without access to the tools they need for academic success. By working together, we are committed to helping schools maximise IT budgets.
